Frequently
Asked Questions
Quick answers for students, parents, mentors, judges, volunteers, and partners interested in Thrive Labs and the Innovation Challenge.
Who can submit to the Innovation Challenge?
The challenge is designed for Kâ8 students. Students can participate individually or as a team, as long as a parent or guardian helps with the submission process.
Is the Innovation Challenge free?
Yes. The goal is to keep the challenge free for families. Sponsorships help fund student awards, materials, workshops, and program costs.
What do students need to submit?
Students submit a Google Slides pitch deck explaining the problem, their solution, how it works, who it helps, and why the idea matters. Finalists may be invited to present virtually.
Does a student need a finished prototype?
No. A prototype can help, but students can submit a clear idea, plan, model, sketch, demo, or early version of a solution. The challenge is about problem-solving and thoughtful building.
Can mentors, judges, volunteers, or partners help?
Yes. Adults and organizations can support the challenge as mentors, judges, volunteers, or partners. You can start from the Innovation Challenge page or go directly to the relevant interest form.
How are projects judged?
Projects are reviewed based on the problem being solved, creativity, STEM thinking, clarity, real-world usefulness, effort, and presentation quality. The goal is to recognize thoughtful student work, not just polished slides.
Are donations or sponsorships tax-deductible?
Thrive Labs works through a fiscal sponsor so sponsorships can be processed as tax-deductible donations, to the extent allowed by law.
